Rescueless

You can lose your Soul in teaspoons.

Some assume that because they’re heaven-bound their soul is safe…a misconception with dire consequences for both this present life and the next.

It is scary to contemplate the soul lost forever.  We all know about eternal loss…those horrid chambers of gloom far beneath our feet…where once-regal angels ply and pull upon their chains in the echoing darkness…and a parched rich man hollers into the void from which no refreshment ever comes…where the worm of regret never wearies…neither waxes nor relents…but ever reminds of rebellions and sweet calls left unanswered.

No one wants to go there.

But there is a homelier kind of hell…a daily damnation that can descend on us…the torment of the Soul suffering our disinterest, desertion, deprivation…and finally—deadness. The Christian Soul…saved unto eternity…can still in Her day-to-day life suffer inward hell. A willful, overwrought, idolatrous, or distracted Heart is unmatched in its ability to forsake the Soul in favor of the more immediate allurements of relief, reputation, riches, regard, and relationships.

There isn’t a rebel angel that can compete with the Heart for tying the tightest of tourniquets about the World Within…staunching the flow of daily grace…throttling the stream of new-morning-mercies before they can be absorbed…leaving Soul to weaken and wither on the vine like some useless, unvalued appendage.

But Soul will not go quietly….

Feeling lost…exiled to the gloom…the Soul will pull on Her chains…and quietly cry into the void. And if Her calls go answered, She will exact a horrid revenge on Body, Heart, and Mind. If Soul’s needs are continually ignored, they will slip down into the unconscious…where they seethe and foment…then come back as demands.

Here monsters get birthed.

Neurosis…obsession…compulsion…depression…disease…violence…rage…

and even worse—gushes from a Soul in agony…overwhelming all other realms of the Self in a deluge of unexplainable behavior. Normally quiet and unassuming, the Soul will lash out with such force…rising like an emaciated and ruthless giant…toppling every wall the hapless Heart attempts to raise against Her. Will and Mind are defenseless in the resulting torrent…and are swept away in the irresistible urge to act out…on others and on the Self.

No one wants to go here.

Blessedly, this is the Day of Rescue. Today is the day of Deliverance. Today is the day of Recovery. Soul can be saved today…and the next…and the following one…spoonful by spoonful… bucket by bucket…bushel by bushel. This isn’t only about heaven.

He’s always saving you. Did you know that? To him who has eyes to see….This is the only Soul you’ll get…you don’t get a new one…this is the one you bring into eternity.

Let the Loveliest Shepherd save you now. Still your Self and be quiet. Ask for nothing… and what your Soul really needs will be revealed….Maybe you need His kiss…or maybe you’ll find an irresistible need to kiss Him. You can do this.

Soul without intimacy is a ticking time bomb. Soul with intimacy is Rescue.

“Therefore we do not become discouraged
(utterly spiritless, exhausted, and wearied out through fear).

Though our outer man is [progressively] decaying and wasting away,
yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day after day.”

2 Corinthians 4:16
