If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, it’s normal to feel panic and overwhelm, as well as massive confusion about what to do next. But, do not lose hope! Cancer no longer has to be a death sentence. Today, there are more options available than ever. Consider these 10 healing strategies for cancer below:

1.  Press Pause. If your specialist is pressuring you into immediately doing surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation, press the pause button and get a second opinion. When my husband was going through cancer, we got rushed into doing surgery. Afterwards, they tried proposed even more surgeries and treatments that we didn’t want. So, we pursued two other medical opinions both of which provided better solutions. Our first doctor wanted to take out not only my husband’s tumor but also his whole bladder, and then his prostate. By consulting with other specialists, we found a better way: Non invasive, alternative therapies that led to my husband’s complete recovery in 10 months! He’s now been cancer free for a year and a half, and his bladder and prostate are healthy and intact. Give yourself every option and get more than one opinion– and consider a specialist who works in the field of alternative cancer treatments.

(Alternative therapies are non toxic, pain free and don’t get you sick to get you better. For details, see my book Healed, Healthy and Whole, How We Beat Cancer with Integrative Therapies and Essential Healing Strategies.)

2.  Change your diet immediately. Cancer is only a symptom of a deeper imbalance that’s led to a breakdown in your immune system.  You can begin to repair it with proper nutrition. Your body has everything it needs to heal if you feed it the right way. Let food be your medicine!

3.  Detoxing physically, emotionally and spiritually is an essential part of getting well. Take a spiritual inventory and commit to resolving unhealed relationships, grief and trauma. Let go of anger, resentment, unforgiveness, sin, guilt, shame, etc. from your life. These are all stressors that can trigger disease—even cancer—and impede your healing.

Your body also has been impacted by many harmful toxins— heavy metals, antibiotics, fungi, viruses, bacteria— that must be flushed out. A daily regime of juicing raw organic vegetables and fruits, taking natural supplements and doing coffee enemas are an essential part of cleansing.

4.  Faith for Healing. Surround yourself with people who love you and have faith in your healing. Avoid anyone—especially doctors—who mock or dismiss that you can get well again. Some specialize in “fear marketing,” that is, frightening you into surgeries and treatments that may not be the best course of action. Walk away! You need support, gentleness, positive attitudes and helpful alternatives at a time like this.

5.  Never give up! A cancer diagnosis is a terrifying one, but you can stay strong by choosing to believe in God’s goodness. God did not send or cause this cancer… He is not punishing you. Our environment is increasingly polluted, our food supply is tainted with unhealthy ingredients, mental and emotional stress wears us down, and our own bad eating habits all contribute to sickness and disease. Nevertheless, there are things we can control: We can make lifestyle choices that can reduce our cancer risk by up to 70 percent— and even reverse cancer! Keep your heart open to the One who can give you wisdom, direction and endurance as you move forward step by step.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”

(Proverbs 3:5-6)

6. Exercise! Cancer hates oxygen and exercising oxygenates your cells, boosts your immune system and gives you energy. Check with your integrative specialist or oncologist as to what would be the best regime for you and keep your body moving!

7. Intimacy with God. If you are a person of faith, begin your mornings with quality time in the Word. God made the heavens and the earth, He controls all things, and He also made you! He knows about every detail of your life, so open your heart and mind and listen to Him! Study the Scriptures– spend time in the psalms. What promises is He giving you for this trial? Keep a journal, write these down, pray them back to Him, and believe them. He will direct your steps, keep you from costly mistakes and lead you to the wisest choices for your healing. If you are not a Christian, begin your mornings in quiet meditation, but call out to God for guidance and direction. He really is there and eager to help!

8. Begin a prayer or support group with people you can trust and be vulnerable with. God asks us to carry one another’s burdens and, during season of illness, it’s especially important to feel the care and support of others. Never isolate yourself- stay in community!

9. Pray for others. No matter how difficult your situation, there are others who are worse off. Take your eyes off yourself and lift up the needs of someone else—it will strengthen your soul, honor God and help someone desperately in need of those prayers.

10. Find time to laugh. Laughter is therapeutic, relieves stress and even boosts the immune system. Expose yourself regularly to people, events, movies, CDs, etc. that can bring a smile to your face and help you forget your problems. Laughter is good medicine!
