Revive reminds us to slow down and savor each moment before they slip away in “Blink”. We sometimes forget how how fast we’re moving and time can get away from us. We can blink and it will all be gone. God warns us of the expiration date we have on this earth, so spend time with friends and family now. Don’t wait until the last minute!

How do you promote an organization that has been in existence since 1865, has a brand that is a dream come true and provides more services to the human community than any other organization on earth? Most would say, “Leave it alone; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

This particular organization spends its time going, doing, helping wherever and whenever needed, 24/7. It has never blown its own horn. However, relying on the generosity of the public for donations to continue its work necessitates that the public is informed.

All quiet on the set while Guy Noland directs a SAVN shoot.

Today’s mass of humanity is spending the majority of their time online. So what is the Salvation Army to do but become “the intersection of technology and ministry, the digital street corner, and the future of evangelism” and call it SAVN.TV—the Salvation Army Vision Network, a new online video and social network?

In order to pull this off, you need someone to lead who is intimately familiar with the inner workings of the Salvation Army and has a working knowledge of filmmaking and production. Enter Guy Noland.

Guy Noland prepares to direct an interview with UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson

As a fifth-generation Salvationist, you would assume Noland would follow in the footsteps of his officer forefathers—and he has, sort of. Noland is definitely hard-core Salvation Army, but he is also hard-core creative. He is not an officer, but he does work for the Salvation Army as the executive director/producer of the Salvation Army Vision Network.

Guy hanging out with actor Kevin Sorbo after directing him in an interview for SAVN.TV

Noland acquired his creative talent from two very creative Salvation Army officers: his father and mother. His dad, Commissioner Joe Noland, was responsible during his career for many theatrical and musical events within the Salvation Army. His mother, Doris, is not only a beautiful vocalist and lyricist, but is also responsible for the creation of the Salvation Army’s answer to Barney, The Fringle. Both parents are authors. Both parents have served tirelessly for more than 45 years all over the world in many high-ranking capacities. As territorial commander of the eastern territory during 9/11, Commissioner Joe Noland led the Salvation Army as first responders descended on the site.

Guy Noland, Executive Director and Producer of The Salvation Army Vision Network, SAVN.TV

Guy Noland’s talent emerged as a child and played out on the stage of musical theater. “I loved looking out into the audience and seeing the smile on people’s faces, knowing I was in part responsible for putting that smile there,” he says. “My performance, along with my fellow actors, allowed these people to escape from their lives for a short while and enter another world.”

Time on stage led to more time on stage, and eventually, as his adolescent years progressed to college age, he followed his dream by heading to Hollywood and entering film school. Life’s checklist seemed pretty charmed, including a future in film writing and directing, a beautiful girlfriend and the vision of enjoying all the glamour of Hollywood. What that dream didn’t include was the temptation that would come to call: addiction to alcohol.

SAVN cameraman listens as Guy explains the next shot

Was that a deterrent to Noland’s success or just a little side habit that most in the industry enjoyed? He explains, “It consumed me and demanded loyalty as my single focus. I lost sight of my dreams, surrendered my finances, my family, my education and eventually my soul.

Guy enjoying a moment with Christian author and speaker Josh McDowell after interviewing him for the human trafficking documentary "Hard Corps".

“I didn’t realize what a harsh taskmaster addiction was until I was sitting at the bottom of the barrel looking up, staring into the face of homelessness. I had given this mistress of alcoholism 12 years of my young adult life and ended up with nothing to show for it.”

It was time for some hard, life-altering and live-saving decisions. Noland began to pick up the pieces by doing what his parents had raised him to do: go to God. Seeking hard after the Lord allowed Noland to find his joy again and develop the strength to, as the Salvation Army says, “Do something!”

Salvation Army Officers get the chance to be on camera at the filming of a Salvation Army event.

Earning a master’s degree in cinema and TV arts gave Noland the confidence and knowledge to work in executive capacities for major players in the industry. He exercised his creative ability at CBS Studios, Westar Media Group, Westwood One Broadcasting, the Arthur Company, Compass Arts Productions and, eventually, Universal Studios.

Noland, as executive director of SAVN.TV, says his life has completely turned around.

SAVN cameraman listens as Guy explains the next shot

“The hopelessness, the despair, the loneliness—they are not a part of my life anymore,” he says. “I can honestly say that I have a life beyond my wildest dreams. I could never have imagined the way my life is now, especially compared to what it used to be and where I came from. James 4:8 says that if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you, and I am living proof of that.”

Destiny Road was named a Finalist for 2013 International Family Film Festival starring Daniel Zacapa and Traci Dinwiddie and Zoe Myers.

Frank is a dedicated religious leader who becomes obsessed by power and unbridled ambition. His means to achieve this is money! What will speak louder in his life the spiritual or material?

Jeremiah is petty thief, a result of a dysfunctional family. He gives up school and learns from his friend Marti and the “school of the streets”. He learns to fend for himself. Only a miracle can save him from a tragic future.

Elizabeth was raised by an overprotective mother, she gets married to her High School sweetheart and all seems to be perfect. But she soon finds her self caught between her over protective mother and her true love.

Soon this causes a riff and the freedom for which she so longed for is slipping away… Three different stories, three people seeking the same answer to life’s dilemmas: how to chart a new course in life?

"In times of public calamity such as that of the war...it is especially becoming that the hearts of all should be...turned to that Almighty Power in whose hands are the welfare and the destiny of nations...

The War of 1812 began on JUNE 18, 1812.

While Napoleon was invading Russia on the other side of the world, the British captured American ships and enslaved sailors.

They incited Indians to capture Fort Mims, massacring 500 men, women and children.

They captured the U.S. Capitol, burnt the White House and the Library of Congress.

They bombarded Fort McHenry, attacked on Lake Eire and New Orleans.

They captured Maine’s cities of Eastport, Castine, Hampden, Bangor and Machias.

Outraged, many volunteered for the Army, including Davy Crockett.

On March 9, 1812, in a message to Congress, President James Madison stated:

“The British Government, through its public minister here, a secret agent of that Government was employed in certain States…in fomenting disaffection…and in intrigues with the disaffected, for the purpose of…destroying the Union…

The discovery of such a procedure…will not fail to render more dear to the hearts of all good citizens that happy union of these States which, under Divine Providence, is the guaranty of their liberties.”

On June 1, 1812, President James Madison stated to Congress:

“We behold…on the side of Great Britain a state of war…Whether the United States shall continue passive under these progressive usurpations and these accumulating wrongs…shall commit a just cause into the hands of the Almighty Disposer of Events.”

On June 19, 1812, in a Proclamation of War, President James Madison stated:

“I do moreover exhort all the good people of the United States…as they feel the wrongs which have forced on them the last resort of injured nations…to consult the best means under the blessing of Divine Providence of abridging its calamities.”

President Madison, who had introduced the First Amendment in the First Session of Congress, proclaimed a National Day of Public Humiliation and Prayer, July 9, 1812:

“A day, to be set apart for the devout purpose of rendering the Sovereign of the Universe and the Benefactor of mankind the public homage due to His holy attributes; of acknowledging the transgressions which might justly provoke the manifestations of His divine displeasure; of seeking His merciful forgiveness, and His assistance in the great duties of repentance…

and especially of offering fervent supplications that in the present season of calamity and war He would take the American people under His peculiar care and protection…turning the hearts of our enemies from the violence and injustice which sway their councils against us, He would hasten a restoration of the blessings of peace.”

On November 4, 1812, in his Fourth Annual Message, President James Madison stated:

“The war in which we are actually engaged in…was preceded by a patience without example under wrongs accumulating without end…Appeal was accordingly made…to the Just and All-powerful Being who holds in His hand the chain of events and the destiny of nations…We prosecute the war with united counsels…until peace be so obtained…under the Divine blessing.”

On February 24, 1813, President James Madison stated to Congress:

“Great Britain had already introduced into her commerce during the war a system…resting on a mass of forgery and perjury…making an unfortunate progress in undermining those principles of morality and religion which are the best foundation of national happiness….The general tendency of these demoralizing and disorganizing contrivances will be reprobated by the civilized and Christian world.”

On March 4, 1813, in his Second Inaugural Address, President James Madison stated:

“I should be compelled to shrink if I…felt less deeply a conviction that the war with a powerful nation…is stamped with that justice which invites the smiles of Heaven on the means of conducting it to a successful termination.”

On May 25, 1813, in a Special Session Message to Congress, President James Madison stated:

“The contest in which the United States are engaged appeals…to the sacred obligation of transmitting entire to future generations that precious…independence which is held in trust by the present from the goodness of Divine Providence.”

On July 23, 1813, President James Madison proclaimed a National Day of Public Humiliation and Prayer:

“In times of public calamity such as that of the war…it is especially becoming that the hearts of all should be…turned to that Almighty Power in whose hands are the welfare and the destiny of nations…

For…He has blessed the United States with a political Constitution founded on the will and authority of the whole people and guaranteeing to each individual security, not only of his person and his property, but of those sacred rights of conscience so essential to his present happiness and so dear to his future hopes…

that He would pardon our manifold transgressions and awaken and strengthen in all the wholesome purposes of repentance…so He would…bestow His blessings on our arms in resisting the hostile…

If the public homage of a people can ever be worthy of the favorable regard of the Holy and Omniscient Being to whom it is addressed, it must be that in which those who join in it are guided only by their free choice, by the impulse of their hearts and the dictates of their consciences…that religion, that gift of Heaven for the good of man, freed from all coercive edicts…

and making no appeal but to reason, to the heart, and to the conscience, can spread its benign influence everywhere and can attract to the divine altar those freewill offerings of humble supplication.”

On December 7, 1813, in his Fifth Annual Message, President James Madison stated:

“It has pleased the Almighty to bless our arms both on the land and on the water….On Lake Erie, the squadron under the command of Captain Perry having met the British squadron of superior force, a sanguinary conflict ended in the capture of the whole…We may humbly repose our trust in the smiles of Heaven on so righteous a cause.”

On September 1, 1814, in a National Proclamation after the British had invaded the Capitol, President James Madison stated:

“The enemy by a sudden incursion have succeeded in invading the capitol…though for a single day only, they wantonly destroyed the public edifices…The glory acquired by their fathers in establishing the independence which is now to be maintained by their sons with the augmented strength and resources with which time and Heaven had blessed them.”

On September 20, 1814, in his Sixth Annual Message, President James Madison stated:

“The capture of nearly a thousand American vessels and the impressment of thousands of American seafaring citizens…by the Government of Great Britain…Our beloved country…persevering hostility…must carry with it the good wishes of the impartial world and the best hopes of support from an Omnipotent and Kind Providence.”

On November 16, 1814, President James Madison proclaimed a National Day of Public Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer:

“In the present time of public calamity and war a day may be recommended to be observed by the people of the United States as a day of public humiliation and fasting and of prayer to Almighty God…for…His blessing on their arms, and a speedy restoration of peace…voluntarily offering…humble adoration to the Great Sovereign of the Universe, of confessing their sins and transgressions, and of strengthening their vows of repentance.”

When the war ended, President James Madison addressed Congress, February 18, 1815:

“I lay before Congress copies of the treaty of peace and amity between the United States and His Britannic Majesty…We accord in grateful acknowledgments for the protection which Providence has bestowed upon us.”

On March 4, 1815, President James Madison proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving:

“To be observed by the people of the United States with religious solemnity as a day of thanksgiving and of devout acknowledgments to Almighty God for His great goodness manifested in restoring to them the blessing of peace. No people ought to feel greater obligations to celebrate the goodness of the Great Disposer of Events and of the Destiny of Nations than the people of the United States…

To the same Divine Author of Every Good and Perfect Gift we are indebted for all those privileges and advantages, religious as well as civil, which are so richly enjoyed in this favored land…especially for the restoration of the blessing of peace.”

For artists it's not so much about how they draw but how they see. Amy Layne Litzelman says that when dwelling from God's perspective, we see purpose, beauty, and life.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the Heavens are higher than the earth , so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9

I have never been much of an artist. When I took a beginner’s drawing class in college, my bottles were pretty uninspiring. I could never seem to get on paper what I saw on the table. Eighteen years later, I learned that there is more than one approach to drawing.

Now the brain is much too complex for me to explain, and there is still much even the experts don’t understand, but suffice it to say, each half of our brain handles incoming information differently. The left hemisphere analyzes, counts, marks time, plans step-by-step procedures, verbalizes, and makes rational statements based on logic. Using the right hemisphere, however, we are able to dream, imagine, understand metaphors, create new combinations of ideas, and use intuition; we can see how things exist in space and how parts go together to make up the whole.

Many of us who are not naturally artistic draw from a logical, planned-out mode and our pictures look flat and lifeless. Artists who paint and draw from the creative, intuitive right brain, on the other hand, pull you right into their pictures. It’s not so much about how they draw, but how they see.

In Mark 8:17-18, Jesus questions the disciples’ ability to see beyond the logical, obvious exterior. “Do you not yet discern or understand?…Having eyes, do you not see?”

If we look at the world around us through earth-bound, analytical vision, it looks pretty flat and bleak. We see the endless, mindless tasks and cycles in which most people exist. It can be very dreary, even depressing. But if we allow the Spirit to bring us in line with His vision–what a difference. Suddenly we see purpose and beauty and life.

I used to look at the snowdrifts in my flower beds and all I could think of was death; my beautiful flowers were all dead. But then the Spirit opened my eyes. Those flowers aren’t dead; they’re resting. They’re getting ready to burst forth even bigger in the spring. And not only that, but they have thrown their seeds all around them to bring up new life.

What do you see? Are you walking in the reality of Heaven, or are you stuck in the realm of humanity? Just as Jesus heard the cries of a blind mean on the road to Jericho and restored his sight (Luke 18:35-43), so he will hear you. Just cry out. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

God will continue to reveal His character to you according to your needs and according to His purposes. You will come to know more and more about Him as you obey Him.

Your understanding of God’s character ought to be greater now than when you first became a Christian.

Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am Yahweh.
I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty,
but I did not reveal My name Yahweh the them.”

EXODUS 6:2-3

As God has walked with His people through the generations, He has progressively revealed His nature according to His purposes and the needs of His people. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew Him as God Almighty, because they needed His mighty power to protect them from their enemies. Moses and the Israelites learned that God was Lord, Master over every nation and every thing. God not only delivered them from the most powerful ruler in the world, but also brought them into the Promised Land. They came to experience Him as Lord, preeminently powerful over the pagan gods of their day.

God will continue to reveal His character to you according to your needs and according to His purposes. You will come to know more and more about Him as you obey Him. When you grieve, He will come to you as Comforter. When you are in need, He will demonstrate that He is the Provider. When you face a serious challenge, He will reveal that He is God Almighty.

Your understanding of God’s character ought to be greater now than when you first became a Christian. You ought to know Him today better than you did five years ago. Sadly, some Christians continue to live year after year with the same basic knowledge of God that they had when they first began walking with him. Whatever your present situation, view it in the light of what God is teaching you, through circumstances, about Himself and you will come to know God in dimensions you have never known Him before.

Jeremy Camp reminds us of the deep and passionate love God has for us in this acoustic version of “Take You Back”. God does not kick us when we’re down, but He picks us up and tells us of His love. God’s love is unconditional. His forgiveness is unconditional. God is forever and nothing we do can shake His love.
