“And the Lord came and stood and called as at the other times,Samuel! Samuel!

Then Samuel answered, Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10

There is nothing quite like hearing the whisper of God.

Like a drop of dew on a blade of grass. Pure. Clean.

Perfectly reflecting His love and truth. It reminds us that we are not alone. That One Who is greater than us is near – nearer than we could measure.

I seem to find myself in an almost constant conversation with the Spirit on most days  – asking what I should do or what He thinks, or simply sharing the excitement of moment by moment discoveries and celebrations. I sometimes pause and smile at the wonder of it.

If someone were to ask a few years ago, I might have said that it was in my prayer room or on morning walks where I most clearly heard His words to me. Maybe even at a benchmark where I often pray, or in the quiet hours of the night when I can’t fall back to sleep.

It wasn’t until my husband, Matt, left town for a week that I realized one of the sweetest treasures God had given to me: the kitchen.

Being alone for a week, I didn’t do a whole lot of cooking. A bit of tuna salad, some fruit, and a smoothy here and there. It seemed like such a nice break from the routine of wondering what I was going to make for dinner. I looked forward to having extra time to spend at other projects that needed to get finished. Then time passed, Matt returned home, and we were back in the routine. Monday evening: making dinner again.

As I moved from cupboard to cupboard pulling out ingredients and utensils, a sweet sound interrupted my silent thoughts.

A calm, gentle Voice spoke clean, simple truth and made my breath catch in the back of my throat.

I paused, smiled, and continued with the process of dinner. But as I worked, we visited. About the day. About dinner. About a piece of wisdom He had just lodged in my spirit. About things that would draw me yet deeper into His written Word and later become food and drink when I was feeling overwhelmed or weary.

Before I knew it, dinner was made and on the table. Little would anyone have known how holy that hour had been. How precious. Suddenly a light burst into my heart: Some of the most profound, most cherished times with my Lord have been while chopping, stirring, and washing my way through a meal.

Amazing. This God Who made us, the One Who longs for our devotion and friendship, loves to spend time where we are. In the middle of our day, the middle of our routine, the middle of life.

This God makes a precious altar of fellowship wherever we give Him opportunity.

…I’d love to hear your story.

Where do you meet with God?

What unique place has He chosen to talk to you about the truths in His Word and the details of your life?
