- Simon Vouet, (born January 9, 1590, Paris, France—died June 30, 1649, Paris), painter who introduced an Italianate Baroque style of painting into France. Vouet formed his style in Italy, where he lived from 1612 to 1627.
In addition to the fine detail work and elaborate multi figure composition paintings Vouet painted throughout his career, he also painted a collection of charming and sensitive paintings of the Madonna and Child. These paintings have been extensively imitated or copied by other artists, most competently by his pupils, who remained faithful to his artistic legacy throughout their subsequent careers.
The image of the Christ Child clutching tightly to His mother’s robe in a familiar gesture is one that is well-known to us from other paintings with Madonnas by the artist. This is a moment of intimacy and emotion. The painting, which has several prominent pentiments was recently examined by Arnaud Brejon and Pierre Rosenberg who confirmed its autograph status.
