“One Generation Away” explores ongoing tension and suppression of religious issues in America
EchoLight Studios, a faith and family film studio and distributor, is releasing One Generation Away: The Erosion of Religious Liberty, a docudrama that explores several current state and federal court cases, including Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby, examining the ongoing tension of expression and suppression of religious freedom in America.
Set to release on September 1, 2014, One Generation Away is the world premiere film for EchoLight Cinemas, which utilizes churches as first-showing venues across America before going to theaters.
One Generation Away’s fast-paced approach focuses on seven cases in which religious freedom has come under scrutiny throughout the United States: the Mt. Soledad Veteran’s Memorial in San Diego; wedding service providers in Oregon and Washington; Hobby Lobby’s Supreme Court case; the chaplaincy in the military; two education cases with a collegiate counseling program; and high school cheerleaders in Koontz, Texas.

One Generation Away presents a complex perspective on the religious freedom debate including interviews with individuals and organizations whose freedoms are being challenged, as well as politicians, thought leaders, business executives, religious leaders and freedom advocates from both sides of the political aisle. The film represents Conservative and Liberal points of view in its exploration of how the First Amendment, Equal Protection Clause, Free Exercise Clause and Religious Freedom Restoration Act have been interpreted and applied.
Dr. Vincent Munoz, Concurrent Associate Professor of Law and Associate Professor Department of Political Science at The University of Notre Dame said in the film, “[Thomas] Jefferson said, ‘a free people must be an educated people.’ People need to learn about their rights, learn about where their rights come from, and learn that religious freedom is not granted by government and therefore cannot be taken away by government.”
Veteran Producer/Director Ken Carpenter solicited commentary from more than 60 interviewees, including advocates such as Fox News Host Mike Huckabee; New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas; Executive Director of the Americans United, Barry Lynn; ACLU Attorney James McElroy; Senior Pastor of Hope Christian Church Bishop Harry R. Jackson Jr.; Freedom From Religion Foundation Co-President Dan Barker; Fox News Host Todd Starnes; President of the Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention Russell Moore; and dozens more of America’s respected business and community leaders.
