13th of May – American Minute – Historical Events

The first permanent English settlement in the New World began at Jamestown, Virginia, MAY 13, 1607. Plagued by hunger, malaria, exposure and Indian attacks, many of the 100 settlers sent out by the London Company died, including their minister Robert Hunt.

10th of May – American Minute – Historical Events

A surprise attack before dawn on MAY 10, 1775, gave America one of its first victories of the Revolutionary War. Fort Ticonderoga was later captured. Harvard President Samuel Langdon said, "If God be for us, who can be against us?"

11th of May – American Minute – Historical Events

Irving Berlin was born on MAY 11, 1888. He wrote "God Bless America" in 1917, saying, "To me, 'God Bless America' was not just a song but an expression of my feeling toward the country to which I owe what I have and what I am."
