October 19th – American Minute – Cornwallis Surrenders
Altogether, 17,000 French and American troops surrounded Cornwallis and, on OCTOBER 19, 1781, he surrendered. On September 3, 1783, the Revolutionary War officially ended with the Treaty of Paris, signed by Ben Franklin, John Adams, John Jay and David Hartley:"In the name of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity."
October 18th – American Minute – Edward Winslow
The only Pilgrim to have his portrait painted, Edward Winslow was born OCTOBER 18, 1595. After many hard years, at age 25, Edward Winslow departed with 102 Pilgrims to the New World.
October 17th – American Minute – Burgoyne’s Surrender
OCTOBER 17, 1777, British General Johnny Burgoyne surrendered to American General Horatio Gates, and over 6,000 British troops were captured. Jane McCrea’s death, later immortalized in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, The Last of the Mohicans, rallied Americans.
October 16th – American Minute -The War of Jenkins’ Ear
In 1731, a Spanish commander cut off the ear of British Captain Robert Jenkins and told him to take it to his King. This began the War of Jenkins’ Ear.
October 3rd – American Minute – A Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer
On OCTOBER 3, 1789, from the U.S. Capitol in New York City, President George Washington issued the first Proclamation of a National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to Almighty God.
