“…in the middle of the lampstands
I saw one like a son of man,
clothed in a robe reaching to the feet,
and girded across His chest with a golden sash.
His head and His hair were white
like white wool, like snow;
and His eyes were like a flame of fire.
His feet were like burnished bronze,
when it has been made to glow in a furnace,
and His voice was like
the sound of many waters.
In His right hand He held seven stars,
and out of His mouth
came a sharp two-edged sword;
and His face was like the sun
shining in its strength.

Revelations 1:13-17
Sometimes, even what we know we don’t fully know.
John, author of the verses above, walked daily with Jesus for three years. He laid his head upon Jesus’ chest and spoke intimately with Him. He knew Jesus to be the Christ. Yet, in a moment, John received a revelation of Jesus that caused him to melt.
Remember when Judas and the guards of the high priests and Pharisees came to arrest Jesus in the Garden? Jesus went out to them and asked, “Whom are you seeking?”
“Jesus the Nazarene,” they answered.
Jesus merely spoke out, “I am He,” and they were thrown backwards and to the ground. (See John 18:1-6)
Jesus didn’t rise up with a sword against His enemy, He carried one in His mouth.
Eternal power encapsulated in words.
- As the world shakes around us,
- as the darkness encroaches into areas we care about,
- as prophesies of old become realities of today,
I am certain about one thing:
There’s no contest when it comes to Jesus and His enemies.
Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. (See Matthew 28:18.)
His hand is not short nor His arm weak.
He’s not sulking in a corner or hiding in a closet because of fear.
He’s not worried or alarmed or even surprised.
Sometimes we act like we’ve forgotten how great He is. We look at the world around us in fear, even panic, and react as if God is not great in our midst.
I ran across a verse recently that once again lifted my perspective. There will be a time when the antichrist, the lawless one, will be revealed. But in that revealing, our Savior will also be revealed and
“…the Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth
and destroy him by the splendor of his coming.”
II Thessalonians 2:8
By the breath of His mouth!
And the splendor of His coming!
This is the One we serve.
This is the One we love.
This is the Rock on which we stand.
May our eyes be opened to see Him more fully. And not just to see, but then rise up and walk in the authority and certainty He has purchased for us. There is none like our God.
