Studying movies from good review sites is important. Just because a movie is promoted as a family movie does not mean that it will not have inappropriate material (foul language, crude behavior, or innuendo…) and is the very best choice. Further, today more and more media, including “family movies and TV” are normalizing alternative lifestyles that do not present the best role models. It is important that children and youth see good role models of traditional families with a married father and mother.
Social science research provides evidence that children from intact married families:
are more likely to attend college, are physically and emotionally healthier, are less likely to be physically or sexually abused, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol and to commit delinquent behaviors, have a decreased risk of divorcing when they get married, are less likely to become pregnant/impregnate someone as a teenager. Children receive gender specific support from both a mother and a father. Research shows that mothers and fathers, as well as complex biologically rooted interactions, are important for the development of boys and girls.
It is challenging to find movies with good, traditional family role models without foul language, crude behavior, violence, or inappropriate innuendo. For example, Ice Age: Collision Course celebrates traditional family but has some crude elements. Alice Through the Looking Glass, celebrates traditional family values but has some creatures that may be too scary for little children. The top pick family movie for early August in theaters is Finding Dory. This movie presents the values of a traditional family in a cinematographically excellent movie with delightful comedy. It shows how those with disabilities can overcome and contribute valuable service to others. It does not have foul language, crude behavior, or inappropriate humor. This is an uplifting, inspirational movie for all ages.
