The 1981 film Chariots of Fire told the amazing true story of Eric Liddell’s journey to the Olympic Games, and his Christian convictions that caused him to make the hardest decision of his life there. The movie was adored by viewers and critics alike, and went on to earn almost $60 million at the box office with a budget of only $5.5 million.
However, not many know what happened to Liddell after the events in the movie unfolded. In 1925, he traveled to China to become a missionary teacher. Besides visiting Scotland two more times after he left for China, he remained dedicated to helping the Chinese people, and eventually died in a Japanese internment camp in 1945 due to a brain tumor, only five months before liberation. According to a witness, his last words at the camp were “it’s complete surrender”, explaining his faith in Christ.
On Wings of Eagles is a Chinese-financed movie about the events that took place after Liddell’s victory at the Olympic Games, detailing everything until his unfortunate death. The synopsis is as follows.
ON WINGS OF EAGLES is the continuing true story of Eric Liddell’s glorious life after winning Olympic gold in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Liddell (JOSEPH FIENNES) has traveled to China, in order to teach local schoolchildren. In 1937, the Japanese invade China at the outset of WWll and Liddell and other foreign nationals are taken as prisoners and placed in one of the many Japanese internment camps, where Liddell continues to spreads his message of hope. ON WINGS OF EAGLES is the unofficial sequel to Chariots of Fire, one of the best sports movies of all time.
On Wings of Eagles is expected to be released on November 3rd, 2017. The movie is also known as The Final Race.
