At a recent conference pastor John Piper shared an interesting analogy. He recounted a time when he showed his love towards his wife on their 49th year anniversary by buying her flowers and taking her out to dinner. After presenting the gift to his wife, she said, “Oh, Johnny, they’re beautiful! Why did you go to such an expense?” He could have responded by saying, “it’s my duty. I read it in a book. This is what husbands do.”
What’s wrong with that answer?
Instead of telling her it was his duty, he told her that he couldn’t help himself. He wanted to spend time with her because he loved her and taking her to dinner would make him very happy.
Yes, it is our duty to love serve God. However, obligation should not be our primary motivation. We should be driven to serve God because we love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We can’t help but shout praises to our Savior, Redeemer, and Friend!
Let me encourage you to pursue a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. Grow deeper in your love for Him day by day. Let your love for God drive every decision you make! Ask God to give you external faith, evident and visible to everyone who meets you.
