I began substitute teaching 9 years ago. It is a very random job, subbing. You spend A LOT of time waiting for the phone to ring. Anytime. Weeks before they need you. Days before they need you. The night before and even at 5 a.m. the very morning they need you. You are NEVER away from your phone and your pin number is the most important number you’ve memorized besides maybe your anniversary, the dates your children were born, and 911.
You also learn to wake early so that a 5 a.m. call doesn’t shock you out of a deep sleep and the need to recall that pin number immediately.
One morning years ago I was waiting for the all-important call to come. By 7 a.m. it hadn’t come. By now it most likely wouldn’t. So, my conversation with the Lord that morning went like this: “Well God, I guess I won’t be subbing today. What’s Plan B?” And the Lord said to me, “There is no Plan B. I knew you wouldn’t be subbing today. What happens now is Plan A. It’s always been Plan A. Make that coffee date with your friend.” And this is what I wrote in my journal:
If what is ahead is God’s perfect plan for our lives, than each day, regardless of how it unfolds, is always Plan A, never Plan B. There is no Plan B in God’s economy. Jeremiah 29:11 says that God knows the plans He has for us. So, He is either almighty or not.
Back to the wedding. It turns out that last Friday was probably the windiest day ALL YEAR in Rancho Cucamonga. Windiest meaning that if you were outside and had long hair, your hair was blowing parallel to the ground. Really. Not ideal conditions for an outdoor wedding. The wedding was to begin at 4 p.m. Around 11 a.m., the bride and groom had to make a very difficult decision. They decided to move everything indoors. Everything. Both the ceremony and the reception that were to be outside in a beautiful grassy area with tall trees and strung lights and magic and pixie dust. You know, everything exactly as the bride and groom (mostly the bride) had imagined it all her life. All. Her. Life.
Onto Plan B. Oh, wait. There is no Plan B in God’s economy.
After the tears and the wishing it were different, the groomsmen got to work moving everything indoors. And what do you know… there is a beautiful little chapel at Etiwanda Gardens! And it was magical. A bit crowded, but magical with white twinkle lights and wooden pews and floor to ceiling windows that looked out onto the grass where rented white chairs were blowing over in the wind.
The reception was moved to the ballroom where church is held on Sundays. And that was just right too. Like being in a forest glade with dark brown drapes, and brown planter boxes as center pieces made to hold the most exquisite fall flowers. Lights circling the dance floor and a stage for the incredibly talented band. A head table with beautiful bouquets in vases of water and brown paper heart garland strung high behind the couple.
God’s Plan A. The plans for us He had known about since before the beginning of time. The wind didn’t catch God by surprise. He wasn’t pacing and fretting and wondering how He was going to pull this one off. An indoor wedding. That was His plan. Plan A. It’s always Plan A.
