A few weeks ago I spoke at a homeschool convention in Michigan where my film was showing. One of the topics I chose to speak on was that of the need for a Biblical Education Manifesto among Christians, particularly home educators.

I have spent the last several years studying the American educational system, especially while doing research for the film, and have been around thousands of homeschoolers, and over the years I have had a growing sense of the need for some kind of “going back to basics” declaration regarding what we teach and why we teach it.

A close friend of mine, who is a homeschool dad himself and also a public school teacher, has written a book that he hopes to get published under a pseudonym and was sharing with me some of the content of his book, which will include a blow-by-blow look at how the education of our children relates to each of the Ten Commandments.

During our conversation, I told my friend about my idea for a Biblical Education Manifesto and asked him if he would write one, based on his book. He agreed and the result of that was the basis for one of my talks in Michigan. I would like to share it with you here and in subsequent blog entries.

My plan is to publish this manifesto on the IndoctriNation website and get people to sign it. For now, may the Lord bless your family through His word as presented in this humble submission.

A Biblical Education Manifesto – Part I

1. We believe that a Biblical education is a direct application of the Great Commission.

“And Jesus came and said to them,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

(Matt 28: 18 – 20)

The Great Commission not only includes the preaching of the gospel and baptizing new believers, it also includes making mature disciples by teaching them to observe all that Jesus has commanded. This is the goal of a truly Biblical education.

We believe that the Great Commission begins in our households, expands to our friends and family, our local community, and then to the rest of the world (Acts 1: 8). A parents’ primary responsibility regarding the Great Commission is the evangelism and discipleship of their children.

We believe that one of the reasons God created us in Christ was to accomplish good works for His Glory (Ephesians 2: 10). The evangelism and discipleship of our children, which is at the core of a Biblical education, is one of the most important good works that God has commanded us to accomplish.
