Grace Unplugged, a Christian film that explores the true meaning of success opened in theaters across the nation over the weekend.

Having just turned 18, the movie portrays Grace Trey who aspires to more than just singing at her church, where the worship leader is her father—a former pop star.

So, with the help of Mossy, her dad’s former manager, Grace records a cover version of her dad’s old Top-10 hit, runs off to Los Angeles, and begins to taste the kind of stardom she’s always dreamed about.

Yet with each rung of the ladder she climbs, Grace feels more and more pressure to compromise her values, further straining her relationship with her parents. Grace Unplugged tackles the question of whether she her experiences will lead her to reject her faith or rediscover it.

It’s that message that won Grace Unplugged the highest viewer-rated film in America on the top rated movie website Fandango.

Christian News Service talked with the director about the story of a “prodigal daughter” that is capturing hearts of moviegoers.

“While we hope the film continues to minister to people and bless people, we hope we made an entertaining, high quality movie that people walk away believing was a good film in addition to being a blessing to their own personal lives,” said Brad Silverman, writer and director of Grace Unplugged.

Filmed in Alabama and produced by Russ Rice, Grace Unplugged, opened in 511 theaters nationwide on Oct. 4 and grossed $1,045,000 during its opening weekend.

“Natural man does not understand the things of God,” said Silverman. “We can share about how a life in Christ can be blessed and that people can be ministered to. That is a foreign language in the secular film business.”

Made for just $1.7 million, the film ranked 15th highest-grossing movie of the weekend, while playing on fewer screens than most of the movies showing at the same time.
