Do you dread the idea of going shopping? Do you often leave the store empty handed, overwhelmed and sometimes in tears? It can be incredibly frustrating. I understand and care. As I tell my clients, “I’m here to hold your hand all the way.” While I might not physically be withYOU, take a look at my simple successful shopping tips for fun and productive day.
1. Cash is queen. Decide how much money you can spend responsibly. If possible, leave your credit cards at home and take cash. When you’re dealing with cold, hard cash, it’s harder to go over your budget. However, it may be a good idea to keep one credit or ATM card with you in case of an emergency (no, an extra pair of shoes doesn’t count).
2. Making a list. Make a detailed, prioritized list and stick to it. Be specific. For example; black pants, no-wrinkle, side zip, bootcut.
3. Online saves time and $$. Check online to be sure you are getting a good price, and also locate the stores where these items are being sold. The internet is always a good place to start. Case in point, I was shopping for a Coach handbag. I knew exactly which one I wanted. I tracked it down at a department store and was able to save 25%, plus free shipping. Uh huh!! I had to be patient (which can be hard), but ended up saving $100. Pre-shopping online also saves time and wear-and-tear since you’ll know exactly where to find what you’re looking for.
4. A great mood. Begin your day with inspiration, nutrition and exercise. Be intentional about styling your hair and applying your makeup. Wear easy on-and-off clothing you feel pretty in! When you show up with a positive attitude, looking and feeling your best you’ll be sure of success.
5. Mother time. Allow yourself plenty of time. When you feel rushed you tend to make impulse purchases you may later regret. When you purchase clothes that are just so-so, that’s exactly how you’ll feel in wear them- so-so.
6. Pack a bag. Being prepared is key to your success. When I shop I pack a tote with:
*Shopping List
*Color Rx Mobile App or Color Palette
*Shoes for try-on purposes (trying a dress on with athletic shoes just doesn’t cut it)
*Shapewear, if what you are buying calls for it
*Items you need matching pieces for
*Water & snacks (chocolate for sure)
7. Smart shopping. Be sure to work with your favorite sales person and if don’t have one, check with a manager and be specific about what your needs are. Typically she/he can make the right introduction. Try EVERYTHING on. Ask yourself, “Will I be excited to wear this?” If not, pass. Think about filling your closet with items you can’t wait to show your friends. Do the wrinkle test. When shopping with my clients, I teach them to gather some of the fabric in their fist and squeeze for a few seconds. Let go, and you’ll see exactly how wrinkle/travel resistant the fabric really is. Carefully inspect all items for possible flaws. Also, check the quality of stitching and fabrics. It is better to spend more time in a store initially than to be unhappy with what you buy and return later.
8. Cell free zone. This is YOU time. A time to honor you and your wardrobe. If possible, turn your cell off and enjoy quiet, wireless time.
Armed with these tips, you’ll be sure to successfully check items off your shopping list and have a great time doing it!
