Many of the redemptive and family movies highlighted as Sonoma Christian Home’s top picks have received top SAG, Movieguide ®, and Oscar (Academy Award) honors for 2017. These movies are still in theaters or available in digital formats.

On January 29, 2017, Hidden Figures won the honor of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Theatrical Motion Picture in the SAG Awards for 2017. Octavia Spencer in Hidden Figures has won the award for Outstanding performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for this year’s SAG Awards.

Hacksaw Ridge has received the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion picture. Andrew Garfield of Hacksaw Ridge has gained a SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

For the February 10, Movieguide Awards, the following have been nominated for Best Movies for Families: Finding Dory, The Jungle Book (2016), Miracles from Heaven, Pete’s Dragon (2016), Queen of Katwe, The Secret Life of Pets, Sing, The Young Messiah, and Zootopia.

Movieguide ® Awards nominations for Best Movie for Mature Audiences include the following: Ben-Hur (2016), The Finest Hours, God’s Not Dead 2, Hacksaw Ridge, Risen, and Sully.

Movieguide ® Epiphany Award nominations, for best and most inspiring movie and television programs include the following:  Ben-Hur (2016), God’s Not Dead 2, Hacksaw Ridge, Miracles from Heaven, Risen, and The Young Messiah.

Movieguide ® Bradley Foundation Faith and Freedom Awards nominations include: God’s Not Dead 2, Hacksaw Ridge, Queen of Katwe, Sing, and Sully.  Movieguide ® nominations for Inspiring Performance Awards include: Ben-Hur (2016), Rodrigo Santoro; God’s Not Dead 2, David A.R. White and Melissa Joan Hart; Hacksaw Ridge, Andrew Garfield; Miracles from Heaven, Jennifer Garner and Kylie Rogers; and Risen, Cliff Curtis.

For the upcoming Academy Awards, February 26, 2017, Hidden Figures has a nomination for Best Picture. Octavia Spencer has also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Hidden Figures has also received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Further, Hacksaw Ridge has received an Oscar nomination for Best PictureMel Gibson earned an Oscar nomination for Best DirectorAndrew Garfield gained a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Other Oscar nominations have included Moana, Zootopia for Best Animated Feature; Deepwater HorizonSully, and Hacksaw Ridge for Best Sound Editing. Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects are for Deepwater HorizonThe Jungle Book, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Hacksaw Ridge has received an Oscar nomination for Film EditingAcademy Award nominations for Sound Mixing have gone to Hacksaw Ridge and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Box Office Mojo reports for the first week of February that redemptive and family movies prevail at the top of the box office such as: Hidden Figures; Rogue One, A Star Wars Story; Sing; Moana; Hacksaw Ridge; The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, and Sully.  See Sonoma Christian Home articles, interviews, and photos for more on these movies.

The growing renaissance of artistry and reformation of content continues to produce the best movies for various ages for movie theaters for the first week of February. The top pick redemptive movies for teens through adults is Hidden Figures and Sully. The top pick redemptive movie for all ages is The Resurrection of Gavin Stone The top pick family movie for teens through adults is A Star Wars Story: Rogue One. The top pick movies for children through adults are Sing and Moana.

Movie consumers should continue to carefully research movies they are interested in seeing. Because consumers continue to support redemptive and family movies, more films of the same caliber continue in production.

Here are some of the many more promising redemptive and family movies for various ages coming to theaters in weeks and months ahead for this year that consumer support is making possible: February 10, God Bless the Broken Road and United Kingdom; February 17,  The Heart of a Man; February 23 Is Genesis History ; March 17, Beauty and the Beast, Same of Kind of Different as Me, and Second Coming of Christ; April 7, The Case for Christ , April 21, Born In China; April 5, Guardians of the Galaxy 2; April 26, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales; June 16, Cars 3; November 3, Thor: Ragnarok; November 22, Coco; December 15, Star Wars Episode Eight; and December 24, Let There Be Light.
