The celebrated film ‘Hidden Figures’ receives Oscar nominations for its fine acting and incredible story. During the early years of the NASA space program, three African-American women became an integral part of its success. The blockbuster film Hidden Figures stars the iconic women Octavia Spencer (The Help), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), and recording artist Janelle Monae.
After the Russians boasted a successful space launch, the pressure was on for the United States to do the same. That’s when mathematician Katherine Johnson (Henson), engineer Mary Jackson (Monae), and supervisor Dorothy Vaughan (Spencer) were called in to double the efforts. Kevin Costner plays Al Harrison, the women’s grumpy supervisor who later comes to appreciate their abilities.
The movie also stars Kirsten Dunst (Spiderman), Bill Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), and Glen Powell (The Expendables 3) as astronaut John Glenn.
Hidden Figures won a Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Octavia Spencer was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and she is nominated for an Oscar for the same category. The movie has also received two more Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Motion Picture of the Year.
