The highly anticipated and positively received film ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ made $175 million last year on a budget of only $40 million. The critically acclaimed film proved that Mel Gibson can, and will, continue to direct timeless movies.
Telling the dramatic and inspiring story of Desmond Doss, Hacksaw Ridge roared at the box office, earning three Golden Globes nominations and six Academy Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Andrew Garfield’s stellar performance.
Portrayed by Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-man, The Amazing Spider-man 2, Silence), Desmond Doss is a bright-eyed, optimistic, compassionate young man in Virginia during World War 2. When he enlists in the Army to join his friends and brother in defending our country, he stands out as a conscientious objector. Because of his spiritual beliefs, he cannot touch a gun. However, he desires to be a medic and help his fellow soldiers.
He soon becomes an outcast among his peers and leaders because of his unwavering stance, but is eventually allowed to proceed in his training. Desmond Doss is deployed to the Battle of Okinawa where he became known for his heroic efforts saving the lives of over 75 men in combat during the battle at Hacksaw Ridge–without ever using a weapon.
This film is rated R because of battlefield violence. The message is incredible and the film is emotional with on-the-edge-of-your-seat dramatic. It is very well done and is incredibly inspiring and humbling.
