Netflix now owns rights to all seven Narnia books! They just confirmed their intent to adapt The Chronicles of Narnia into a series of films and shows!
This confirmation comes soon after a rumor which surfaced on the German website Filmstarts. After fans responded with a mostly positive reaction, Narnia.com (the official website for Narnia) posted a press release which details the deal. The release says that “Netflix will develop new series and film projects based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series. Under the terms of a multi-year deal between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from across the Narnia universe into series and films for its members worldwide.” It appears that the producers previously announced for The Silver Chair will also produce the series.
Douglas Gresham, the stepson of C.S. Lewis and a producer of the three original films, said that “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and [he is] looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”
Producer Mark Gordon pointed out that the Narnia stories are timeless, spanning multiple generations and geographical barriers. He is “excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming.”
The three Walden Media Narnia movies have become beloved by fans all around the world. In fact, many think of the movies before they think of the books. It will be interesting to see if the new series will acknowledge the originals or try to distance itself from them. It will also be interesting to see how Netflix handles the Christian themes throughout the books, something Walden Media handled honorably.
