Watching what prevails at the box office and especially across the board with DVDs and streaming, can be encouraging because family, redemptive movies continue to demonstrate staying power. The Canyon News reports March 22 from Hollywood on the top three movies at the box office this week. They state, “For the third consecutive week in a row, the zoo animals reigned supreme at the box-office. The animated hit Zootopia remained in the top spot earning an impressive $38 million.

In just three weeks…earned over $200 million at the domestic box-office. Globally speaking, the movie has already earned over $600 million…Allegiant, (number two at the box office) the next chapter in the Divergent series … has two more installments left to go…Miracles From Heaven landed in third place with an impressive $18.6 million…starring Jennifer Garner is based on a true story and will likely earn reasonable income going into the Easter holiday weekend….”

All three of these movies demonstrate that audiences are looking for uplifting movies. Movieguide.org states “ Zootopia has a strong moral worldview with strong redemptive elements… There are positive references to God, prayer and miracles… message extolling police work to fix a broken world… messages against bullying, against negative stereotypes and supporting getting along with different people…fun, uplifting time at the movies.”

Moviguide.org states about the latest Divergent movie, “… Allegiant has a strong redemptive, moral worldview. The heroine works hard for the betterment of society, protecting life and people. She also learns a lesson in forgiveness. Allegiant contains elements of sacrifice and fighting….” Movieguide.org gives Miracles From Heaven its top ratings and states, “… is an uplifting postcard from God…tells a poignant, cinematic story of faith in Christ…”

Zootopia has a PG rating and is recommended for older children through adults.  The Divergent Series: Allegiant has a PG-13 rating and is more appropriate for teens through adults. (This movie has some brief foul language and violence.) Miracles From Heaven has a PG rating and is suitable all ages.

Most appropriate for this Easter Week are Miracles From Heaven and Risen, which are both associated with Affirm Films under Sony, as well as The Young Messiah. Like Miracles From Heaven, The Young Messiah has a PG-13 rating but is appropriate for all ages.  Risen is also PG-13 but is more appropriate for teens and adults due to graphic Roman brutality.

The production qualities for all of these movies, which are all doing well in theaters, are high. They all have redemptive, uplifting themes. In our present global darkness and conflict, it is encouraging to know that there many fine movie and media makers who are prevailing to facilitate the Renaissance of artistry and Reformation of content in movies, television, and other media for the eternal good of our world.
