Disney’s ‘Queen of Katwe’ new movie trailer inspires heroism in this true story of missionary Robert Katende and Phiona Mutesi. Their story is the focus of Disney’s upcoming feature film that stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo (Selma), Oscar® winner and Tony Award® nominee Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga. The story of Robert and Phiona demonstrates the joy and significance of Christian missionary work. The theme of their story, above all, is in proving that heroism is in each one of us. Every person possesses the ability to touch, inspire, and impact children in each of our respective communities.
A young girl living on the streets of Katwe, Uganda, Phiona discovers an outreach ministry whose purpose is to motivate children just like her, and use chess to encourage them with the notion that “What matters is when you reset the pieces and play again.” What a great message! Coming in for something as simple and necessary as free porridge, Phiona instead found so much more: a community and a mentor in Robert Katende.
Eventually, Phiona began winning local chess matches. She is now an international competitor. Thanks to the Sports Outreach Institute Missionary Program, she is also in school to become a pediatrician with the goal of opening a free clinic in Katwe to help others.
Robert Katende a missionary and refugee of Uganda’s civil war, continues to mentor children in Katwe and teach chess. This touching and important movie opens in theaters September 23, 2016. You can follow news about ‘Queen of Katwe’ at the movie’s website.
