God wants you to obtain and enjoy His salvation as a gift. If you tried to earn the grace of God by your own efforts, you could not do it because you don’t deserve it. But if you ask God to save you because you trust in Jesus, He will do so gladly because He loves you. Grace is undeserved favor. The following story demonstrates God’s gift of grace:
A poor and hungry woman, tired from walking, saw a garden full of fruits. She tried to buy some apples, mangos, and bananas from the gardener, but he refused to take her money. The woman continued to plead with the gardener, but he still refused to sell her the fruit.
The king’s son overheard the woman’s pleading and told her, “My father owns this garden and everything you see around it. He is not a merchant and he does not need your money. You cannot buy his fruit, but if you merely ask for and then receive his gift, he will freely give it to you.” The woman joyfully accepted the king’s gracious gift. The prince picked up an abundance of the most perfect fruit in the garden and gave the woman all she needed.
Likewise, we cannot buy our own salvation. But because of His deep and amazing love toward us, God offers us salvation as a free gift.
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Realizing we are desperately in need of God’s grace humbles us – receiving the grace of God will uplift us.
