In this video, John Piper says that we need to love Jesus more than anything – even more than our very lives.
“What is the nature of this love? Is love mainly doing what Jesus said — so you love Jesus if you do what he said — or is it deeper and have to do with the heart and the affections? He says, “If you love mother or father more than me, you are not worthy of me. If you love son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of me.” That means he is thinking of your love for Jesus like he thinks of your love for your children.”

Sometimes it’s hard to think of Jesus as the one we love the most. There are so many things in this world that fight for affection. Sex, money, drugs, to name a few. But it can even go deeper than that. Maybe our longings for a fulfilling marriage get in the way of a wholehearted love of Jesus. We really do need to love Jesus more.
We love Jesus more because He first loved us. He literally became a man, giving up His glory and power for a time being to live the life we should have lived and died the death that we deserved. He showed us what love is, and it’s only natural that we should love Him for it.
