Gardening is such a stress reliever. Hands in dirt and watching the growth of new plants is spiritual and practical way to plant joy throughout your yard and home. Herbs are fun, easy and require little maintenance if you choose the right ones. Today, here are my top 3 herbs to grow at home.
One of my favorite things to do is to experiment in the kitchen with new recipes out of whatever we’ve grown ourselves. Making my own salad dressings, marinades and sauces is specifically new to me and I’m loving it. Buying fresh herbs at the store can be pricey, but there are cheap to grow at home.
Basil. What is better than homemade pesto being able to add richness to a bowl of tomato soup? Not much I think. The easiest appetizer recipe I’ve ever made requires a lot of basil, and I love having a plant or two in my kitchen.
My basil plant grow in my windowsill in the kitchen. Not only does it add an amazing splash of green to my kitchen space, all it needs in a quick watering every couple of days.
If you want it to grow bigger and stay fresh longer, make sure you are pruning (and using) your plants consistently. Basil likes to be cut and it needs to not have the opportunity to dry out and die.
Rosemary. I’ve had the same rosemary plants for almost three years now. Not only is it hardy, but it can sustain Oklahoma winters and the brutal heat of Oklahoma summers. I not only chop it into salads and marinades, but I also love using it to drizzle with olive oil over potatoes before baking them in the oven.
Lavender. Not only can you make your own amazing lavender lemonade on a hot summer day, but you can also repel mosquitos by planting lavender. Place it in pots outside around your patio or pool and not only with the smell entice you, the bug free environment will enhance your lifestyle outdoors.
You can also enjoy your lavender plant by drying it out once it blooms and using it in sugar scrubs or making your own lavender oil.
